Basic Training Ice Navigation in Polar Waters

This course provides training to Navigation officers to operate ships in polar waters and to address those additional provisions deemed necessary for consideration beyond existing requirements of the SOLAS and MARPOL Conventions, in order to take into account the climatic conditions of polar waters and to meet appropriate standards of maritime safety and pollution prevention.

Course content

The theoretical part of the course will cover:

  • Ice characteristics
  • Of vessel performance in ice characteristics
  • Safe operations and ship maneuverability in ice
  • Legislative requirements
  • Safe working practices
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Pollution- prevention requirements and prevent environmental hazards

    Practical content

    The lectures will take place in a classroom. The lectures will make use of practical examples. In addition simulation training is incorporated in the course. The simulator exercises create situations that provide an opportunity to acquire the required skills as specified in the regulations.

    Entry standards

    Masters, chief mates and officers in charge of a navigational watch with a valid CoC.


    On successful completion of the course, a certificate is issued confirming that the holder has completed a course on Basic training for ships operating in Polar waters.
  • Duur

    The duration of the course is 2,5 days, from Monday until Wednesday. Course intake is between 4 and 8 trainees.


    The Basic Training Ice Navigation in Polar waters fee is € 920,- (exempt from VAT) including lunch, coffee and tea, excluding travel and subsistence expenses.
